Buy vs. By

Can someone tell me the origins of "giving someone a buy" (sp?) such as a pass or a skip or overlooking something? Used in sports teams and when you're not holding someone accountable.Thanks.

I've seen it spelled "bye" rather than the other two ways in listings of play dates. When one team doesn't play on a given date, the word "Bye" is inserted. I find this confusing too. I've assumed it...

SOED has `In Tennis, Boxing, etc the position of an individual who is left without a competitor when the rest have been drawn in pairs, 1883.` This could be connected, as also the bye in cricket.

As long as we're on the subject of sports tournaments, where did the term "seed" come from (as in "John Smith is the first seed in the Coca-Cola Caper")? I though the newscasters were saying "seat"...
